c-Phycocyanin (reagent grade)
Description
Phycocyanin is a water-soluble, fluorescent, blue pigment protein found in cyanobacteria and some algae. It’s cellular role is to form a complex with two other pigment proteins, phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin, which together form the light harvesting complex that captures light for photosynthesis. As a result of its biological function, phycocyanin is a fluorescent molecule with high quantum efficiency. It is excited at around 623 nm and emits red fluorescence at around 641 nm. It can also accept fluorescent energy emitted by phycoerythin, while its own fluorescent energy can excite allophycocyanin. This makes these compound combinations ideal for Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies.
Cyanobacterial phycocyanin (C-PC) is almost exclusively extracted from Arthrospira (spirulina) species. Phycocyanin monomers are composed of equal amounts of alpha (α) and beta (β) subunits. These area 17 kDa and 18 kDa, respectively. The monomers (36 kDa) reversible form trimers (107 kDa) and hexamers (214 kDa) depending on the ionic environment.
It’s uses are primary fluorescent applications, including immunostaining via antibody conjugation, flow cytometry, and FRET. It’s also a useful visual marker for liquid chromatography and gel electrophoresis. It can also be used for in vitro studies on its light harvesting properties.
We supply a liquid chromatography native C-PC purified to the highest purities available on the market. We supply C-PC as an ammonium sulphate precipitate, making it stable for extended periods of time . This needs to be centrifuged and resuspended in the desired buffer for downstream applications.
